Why ISO 45001:2018 Matters

OSHA penalties reached record highs in 2025. Workers’ compensation costs continue to climb. And one serious incident can shut down a facility. ISO 45001 gives you a proactive, risk-based approach to occupational health and safety that integrates with your existing quality and environmental systems. It's built on worker participation — meaning your people help identify hazards and develop controls, which dramatically increases adoption. Companies with certified OH&S management systems see 40-60% reduction in recordable incidents and significant decreases in lost workday rates.

Frequently Asked Questions — ISO 45001:2018

How is ISO 45001 different from OHSAS 18001?

ISO 45001 replaced OHSAS 18001 in 2021. Key differences include stronger emphasis on leadership commitment, worker participation, organizational context, and risk-based thinking. It also uses the Annex SL structure for easier integration with ISO 9001 and 14001.

Is ISO 45001 required by OSHA?

OSHA does not require ISO 45001. However, a certified OH&S management system demonstrates due diligence and can be favorable during OSHA inspections and in litigation scenarios. Many government contracts require it.

Can ISO 45001 be integrated with ISO 9001 and 14001?

Yes — and this is where real value is created. All three standards share the Annex SL structure. An integrated management system reduces duplication, simplifies auditing, and creates a unified operating system for quality, safety, and environment.

How long does ISO 45001 implementation take?

Typically 4-8 months depending on organization size, current safety maturity, and integration requirements. Companies with existing safety programs can leverage much of their current work.
